if theres sex scenes why would you hire a child in the first place

Most is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.
Sex scenes are filmed from carefully choreographed and precise angles. The appearance of a sex act on film occasionally looks wildly different on set. There’s an excellent chance that filming the sex scenes the minor *was* included in looked wildly different, and wasn’t any more or less inappropriate for him than acting in any other scene.
