Very wise words. And I think anyone that has made the connection between self-awareness and peace of mind, knows that you will never experience what it’s like to feel rested and fulfilled if you’re building your life meant to please someone else.

As long as you are pursuing the life meant to satisfy or impress other people, your successes and achievements will always have a level of emptiness, and your failures can feel devastating when they don’t align with what inspires and motivates *you.*

I think the hard part for so many people, is that they don’t know how to define or differentiate what “their truth” is, from what the strictures of society/community tells them it should be.

With the unlimited access we have now to weaponized social media platforms and a completely corporatized media apparatus, it is harder than it’s ever been for people to quiet their mind and concentrate their thoughts. Our brains have basically been short circuited with constant, short burst communication and entertainment, and I think so many people don’t even realize that they have completely lost touch with themselves.

So they just unwittingly pursue the life their favorite influencer, or media outlet, or network of friends/family define as successful. Because if you align with and achieve that definition of success, then you must be happy, right?

I certainly do not have it all figured out. Far from it, but I do know that I am much happier now understanding that my goal in life is to pursue being the best version of myself, which is: someone with a kind heart; someone that is reliable to the people they love and care about; someone that gives effort and doesn’t make excuses or blame others when they fall short; and lastly, understanding that sometimes you aren’t going to be at your best. And that is okay, as long as you remain true to the pursuit of that definition for yourself.

And often times, I think what people find is that when you start there and stay true to it, the material things you’re supposed to want either fall into place, or they become inconsequential.
