This hits hard. Who else has been the “pity interview” for a job already filled internally?

Honestly I think it should be legally required to state that there’s an internal candidate being considered on the initial job post.
Why should I waste my time applying for jobs where they already know who’s going to get it?

And the final candidate just applied yesterday. Even though we were drafting your offer already.

Two rounds of interviews and an aptitude test that I got a near perfect score on. “Sorry, we’ve decided to hire internally.”

Literally had an interview where I panicked and told the recruiter “I can’t do this” and she still insisted I go ahead and scheduled me into a second interview and of course I didn’t get the job. Like are they just fucking toying with us? Why waste mine and their time?

I had an interviewer say ‘I feel bad because you’re actually a better candidate, but I am pretty sure we will give this position to an internal applicant who was basically promised the job’

I had the opposite. Was the internal candidate. They gave it to a rando

Just wait until they hire you for 6mo and THEN replace you because the internal candidate came back from paternity leave.

My favorite is when you get filtered out and realize every single people on the team came from the same orher organization. Hey if you only want peoplw from a specific company say so.

Oh I had the opposite, I was the internal hired into a role promised another role as soon as it opened as part of the conditions. Role posted almost 3 years later, Everyone assumed I was a shoe in, I did the interviews, all good… and CIO pulled a switcharoo and hired a friend from another company she worked at years ago instead. I left, because I’m not playing that game, and they fired the idiot she hired 4 months later.

Happened when I applied somewhere. Knew the hiring manager. Have 3 years IT experience applying for a level 1 position. Job specified experience in Python (which I have). Did well in the phone interview. Did well in the in person. Hiring manager said I should hear back shortly, they just had to go through the HR process. Cut to 3 weeks later and I get an email saying “thanks for applying, but we went with an internal hire who better fit our needs”. Ask the hiring manager what I could improve were I to apply again, and he said “need experience in C and C++”. I appreciate that he gave feedback, but man that sucked to hear when it wasn’t listed as a requirement on the posting.

I had a screening call and then interview scheduled a week later, was going to be a tough technical one too (EE circuitry design related). I studied real hard for that one, passed up on my social life that entire weekend basically.
30 min before the interview, I’m all dressed up and everything, I get an apology call saying they already filled the position, needless to say I wept a bit.
Not sure if this qualifies, if this was an internal hire or what.

Made it through 6 interviews and a month’s worth of my time just to find out they were hiring an internal candidate. That person was one of my interviewers and used me and my experience to get answers on what the role would actually entail. Should’ve been a red flag a lot earlier

Some of the places I’ve worked don’t even externally advertise job postings until they have posted them internally for like a month.

I am 30 and have a masters, 2 years professional experience, and published research outlining my experience in tech and analysis. I have been applying for 5 months, and the first interview I was even offered was the single one that I put down I knew someone who worked there.

I just interviewed for a position with the company I’ve been at for 5 years and it’s also posted externally. It would move me from a client facing role doing inbound calls to working on our products on the backend. As bad as I feel for the external applicants, for my mental wellbeing I need this lol
