Duchy of Warsaw: It was a semi independent state, France had some motives to weaken Russia and Prussia, but overall Poland got a state after a long time. Later instances were the November Uprising or 1830, and the January uprising of 1863, when French popular support existed for the Polish cause. After WW1, French leaders supported the cause of Polish independence in 1919. The Interwar period military alliance existed, but they messed that up.

I think France generally likes countries that don’t border France.

Well, an allied state was always the best way to contain Prussia (and/or any German entities) and protect France’s Eastern border.

It feels like France tends to prefer countries that aren’t right next door.

France – Poland – UK alliance is needed to make sure that Europe is safe from both East and the West

France was a pretty commom destination of emmigrants during the partition period. They even had their own newspaper and heavily lobbied for independent poland.

Fun fact: Poland is one of the two only European states France never declared war on

They also seemed to advocate for a new polish Lithuania too, using territory conquered from Russia to form a Lithuanian Provisional Governing Commission
Idk how is it in france but honestly from my perspective, france not directly opposing partitions of plc turned out to be one of their greatest catastrophies in the long run because it led to the empowerment of prussian state which later on resulted in germany being united by them
But I am not educated enough on this topic this is just how I see this WHILE being uneducated, I am actually curious why france and other european states just let it happen

France: we advocated Poland’s independence.
Also France: silent after the partitions, and failed to honour Poland alliance during WWII.
