Hey, if you practice the customs of every religion inevitably some god has got to answer

Syncretism, incredibly stupid when other people do it, incredibly chill when you do.

Cue to lot of Czechs believing there is (quite literally) “Something”, that have aspects of Christian God they like. (But not calling it “God”, sometimes even calling it names like “Manitou”, not quite worshipping, but sometimes praying a bit.)

Sycretism is always fun to read about. In America we mostly hear about Caribbean practices.

For the rarely-washed Bosnians, this may very well have been a medical procedure /s

    5. Islam historically has always been way more diverse and syncretic than how many Muslims present it and how it is depicted.

For non believers obviously one can draw parallels between the circling of th Kaaba and the fact that the pagan Arabs used to do this.

Muslims throughout history have visited tombs believing them to be places of divine power

      They have consulted Hindu fakirs

      They have carried magical amulets

They arguably adopted the hijab from Byzantine traditions (see pictures of Mary).

Muslim west African kings often consulted magic men.

Many in China adopted elements of Confucianism and were largely indistinguishable from other Han.
      Etc etc.

The quality of much of Islamic teaching in much of the world was pretty iffy at best.

Bear in mind most Muslims couldn’t read the Quran which was in Classical Arabic whilst lacking a formalised clergy like the Catholic Church to be a reliable interpreter.

Wasn’t this a thing among arabs in the 10th century too ? I remember reading about how they would get their childrens baptized because they thought it would repulse demons, and eventually the eastern church had to ban that practice and replace it with a “fake” baptism

I have no knowledge of baptism being against the Islam though praying to icon of virgin Mary is a bit issue. the thing is Sunni view of Christianity is actually more of a miss guided heretic than a heathen. this why ottoman always mush crueler to Shia then to Christians.
