      Her first autobiography, *Knock Wood* from 1984, is intelligent and entertaining and, considering some of her adventures, at times harrowing. (Growing up playing second-favorite to a literal dummy was no picnic. And when Manson’s crew killed Tate and several others, they were looking for Bergen’s then-boyfriend Terry Melcher at the house that Bergen and Melcher had moved out of only nine months earlier.)

      I remember her fondly as the smart and stubborn Murphy Brown. I loved that show and how it showed women could be smart and capable.

      But I did not realize what a smoke show she was back in the day…
