Footage from the years 1919 and 1920 showing WWI veterans who were traumatized by the war. They displayed symptoms ranging from fear of war related objects and soldier’s attire to shakes and seizures to performing military drills.

During the war, many of them were shot for cowardice since shell shock was not identified as a psychological injury yet.

This is so sad 🙁 so what’s happened here? Did they see/do stuff that was so insane and crazy that it literally broke their minds?? Their brains couldn’t process what was happening or what?

We’re still so savage to this day in countless ways. Just more efficient and very Machiavellian.

I will never be able to comprehend the horrors people live through in wars. It’s glorified in films and by people who have never experienced it, but it’s a living hell no one should have to experience

As someone with CPTSD what’s crazy is I recognize some of these men’s behaviors in myself. Nervous system overload. It takes a long time to get through it. You never fully recover. But you can to survive, with time, if you let yourself live long enough with it.

I wonder how many young conscripts were shot for suffering from PTSD.

The colorization, filtering and change in geometry really makes that footage look bad, which is a shame.

John Huston made a WWII documentary as part of the war effort about soldiers in a military hospital inflicted with hysterical blindness. There are moments in it that are incredibly powerful. It’s called *Let There Be Light.*

Just a little PTSD there. Jesus. These poor guys suffered on the battle field and then for years after as their mental health issues were mostly ignored. Or used as a sign of utter weakness against them.

    10. The psychological fallout from that war is something I actually think The Peaky Blinders did really well. It was a continuous and core theme to the show.

Not to take anything away from the horror of this stuff, but I think one of the sad parts is that a lot of these men were probably just undiagnosed with serious mental issues before the war then just thrown in the meat grinder.

In Italy they were called ‘war idiots’, and in war they were systematically treated as fraudulent malingerers and sent before a court-martial. There was no rehabilitation for them: society acted as if they didn’t exist, and the luckiest ones—those who escaped execution—ended up buried alive in an asylum
