My dad was Marine Corps swim instructor at Parris Island and mom’s older brother was there in the summer of 1956 serving as a court reporter for the investigation and court martial arising out of the Ribbon Creek Incident. In fact, my dad became part of an expanded training department due to that event. But my mom’s older brother and wife were staying on the base and my mom’s SIL was pregnant so mom, who was 17 at the time, came with them to babysit her niece. My aunt snapped this picture as mom was taking her niece to her 1st swimming lesson, where dad was the instructor. I’m lucky enough to still have her in my life today as she’s in her later 80’s – and still doing great.
