Context: In 1910. As home secretary, Churchill sent in the army to aid local police in crushing the Tonypandy riots, which were caused by workers going on strike to protest poor wages. A whole lot of people were injured in the beating, and at least one striker was bludeoned to death by police.

In 1932. Approximately 40,000 Textile workers in the Russian city of Ivanovo went on strike to protest poor wages. Due to how all factories were owned by the “People”. Stalin deemed the textile strike to be a threat to national security. The NKVD would quickly and violently crush the strike. Many of the participants either being exiled to the gulags or executed.

In 1889, a 100,000 German miners in the Ruhr river valley would go on strike to protest, once again, poor wages. Despite Otto Von Bismarks demands to send in the army and shoot anyone who refused to go back to work. Kaiser Wilhelm II surprised everyone by siding the workers and “encouraged” local mine and factory workers to negotiate with the striking workers. Kaiser Wilhelm II was so supportive of the strike that he even went as far to suggest that the army should burn down the homes of local mine owners and to keep burning down their homes until the mine owners gave the workers what they wanted.

Also this incident is why Otto Von Bismark was removed by Kaiser Wilhelm. Turns out while Bismark was a genius in foreign policy. The man was less capable in administrating domestic issues. At least issues that didn’t necessitate in shooting people.
