It’s because if the company pays a little bit more, they get to move up in the rankings without any other qualifications or checks. It’s quite literally so stupid. The same thing happens when I search “food near me open now” on Google/Maps and the first five results are all “sponsored” and miles and miles away from me. And they aren’t even presented like an ad – it’s just “wow look at all of these places that I enjoy that must have opened overnight” when really the top five search results near me are in Atlantis and accessible once every fourth Sunday at midnight (if you take the ferry).
