To be fair, the Beatles were in India meditating while the tanks were rolling.

    2. In Britain there was a “Backing Britain” patriotic campaign at the time.

Paul McCartney heard of it, and decided do do a little trolling by making a song with a pun about the opposite. “Back in the USSR” which sounds like “Backing the USSR”.

there were also a lot of American patriotic Rock ‘n Roll songs, like Chuck Berry’s Back in the U.S.A. and California Girls by The Beach Boys. The song is in the style of The Beach Boys with its harmonies, sung in the style of Jerry Lee Lewis, and the lyrics are in the style of Chuck Berry’s song. It works especially well since there’s a Georgia in both the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R.

Paul didn’t write the song to celebrate Soviet politics. He wrote it to mock the British campaign while also parodying The Beach Boys and Chuck Berry at the same time.

      Paul’s a genius.
