Just a reminder that the person most responsible for this, Governor Jim Rhodes, was reelected two more times. He ordered an exhausted National Guard unit that had been policing highway overpasses because of a bloody independent trucker strike because he was losing a Republican Senate primary, and he wanted to look tough.

Now the state office building across the street from the capital is named after him, and there’s a statue of him in front of it.
