Yet Nats rewrite history to make out Scotland was not a willing participant in UK and was a victim and a lot of Scotland now believes this is true.

I’ve always thought that a condition of Scottish independence be that they take Northern Ireland with them.

    3. Grew up in southern Ontario where evidence of Scottish colonialism and eager empire participation was everywhere.

Imagine my surprise when I moved to Scotland for work and discovered the current trend of revisionist nationalism painting them purely as victims.

Also, I have no idea what this meme is. It’s basically a dark screen with 2 flags and blue gloves

    4. Angry_Scotsman7567 on

No, we absolutely were. It just happened a lot earlier and the English were very successful at it, so we went on to carry out a lot of similar things *for* the British once we were adequately colonised.

The Scottish are professional victims, they were a colonising nation even before they joined with England

    6. Do people not recognise that two things can be true at once? Some scots benefited from the empire, and some were crushed by it. Welcome to a world in full colour, not just black and white.

The Scots often feel victimised in this modern day and age from the English and often tout Irish ties. The Irish don’t view the scots, by and large, as kin and basically the same as English.

as a lowland scot I agree entirely, but I think its fair to say the highlanders got the empire treatment. Theres even famine roads up the northern west coast

Picts – we were wiped out by Irish colonisation. Only fair we do some in return, no? Fairs fair in an unfair world.

    10. Afraid-Community-985 on

That’s only fair if you’re talking about lowland Scots. This meme is lumping the Gaelic Highlands in with the lowland and paints a very shallow understanding of history. I’m amazed

Yeah, I feel like people forget there’s two entirely different cultures and histories in Scotland that have been in conflict much of history

    12. Cool-Prior-5512 on

These things always overlook that Scots and Highlanders are two different cultural groups that had two completely different experiences.

Scots were inconvenienced by British rule.

      Highlanders were ethnically cleansed.

Highlanders are much more culturally connected to the Irish.

Never mind the American descendants of Ulster Scots that go off about British colonialism in Ireland

    14. Belfast Paddy’s and Dublin Paddys are just the same to Scots,, Welsh, Manx, Cornish and the English. No blacks, no dogs, no Irish did not mean aye, but you’re from Ulster Scots

    15. Bartellomio on

Neither are Irish people BTW. Unless they’re extremely old or time travelers.

Ironically, this kind of patter would serve that core Empire aim: divide and rule.

In basically every country of the Empire, there were people to promote and people to denigrate. Even in England there were those who were seen as worthier, due to class, or accent, or money. In India, the martial races and caste were shepherded into becoming sepoys. Tribal loyalties were played on in Africa to control areas. Religions were divided whenever possible to foment difference.

In Scotland, Highlands and Lowlands which were already unfriendly were stoked to the great disaster of the Clearances. Protestants and Catholics were treated differently. Scottish culture, particularly Gaelic but also the Scots language, were removed from public life, excluded from the cultural zeitgeist as much as possible, not a feature of education, several others.

Were Scots as oppressed as we were oppressive? Probably not, but the whole point is that the Empire made use of what it could, attempted to destroy what it could not. Bagpipes, kilts, whisky, and our martial culture could all serve the Empire. But several aspects of what we were were lost.

    17. BravestGrunt2000 on

Scots tryna claim oppression is basically a huge insult to the Irish and Welsh

As children,We were genuinely afraid of the Scottish regiments. They were always the nastiest to us and I know it was worse for the adults.
