When we say equal rights and unions are to help everyone, that includes you and your loved ones.

      >”They adopt the progressive position…”

…_**only** for the topic which negatively affects them, and **only** until it stops affecting them._

They do not use the experience to consider how that one topic might connect to the bigger picture.

They do not use the experience to examine how their core beliefs might be flawed.

This behavior itself is a further indictment of their lack of intellectual integrity because for many, such as Gaines, it was largely a single issue influence which brought them into the MAGA world in the first place. At which time they bought fully into the overall narrative. And yet now, when faced with a focused real world consequence of the big picture narrative, their response will be to try only fix the _one_ problem affecting them.

In other words…one issue in common is enough to swallow the entire narrative, but one issue opposed is not enough to make them question the premise of the rest of it.

100% this. It’s a distinct lack of empathy. It’s more of a focus on what about me-ism. It’s also a lack of intellectual curiosity and ability to look at issues from all vintage points. Once they become ensconced in a position it doesn’t change. The dreaded word “Socialism” or Democratic Socialism is horrible to them because they envision lazy welfare queens, horrible immigrants, and people of color taking a piece of the pie vs an inability to see that 9/10th of the pie is being stolen from them by the oligarchs and sycophants in this administration.

    4. This understanding by conservatives that the libs will bail them out after their tantrums is why they continue to throw tantrums.

I remember when conservatives were laughing at people protesting a pipeline right up until they found out their homes were in the incineration zone

Well, this is not bad, this means that they are not THAT dogmatic.

    7. As Frank Wilhoit has put it, conservatism is about in-groups and out-groups:

      > There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect

The great achievement of modern day US conservatism is that they convinced a huge group of voters that they belong to an in-group while in reality only rich , preferably white, people are in that in-group.
And now some of them find out the hard way.

    8. Yup. Nancy Reagan was pro stem cell research after Ronald was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Megan McCain suddenly became aware of how bad the American healthcare system is once her father had to experience it through cancer treatment. I know there’s more but can’t think of any right now. Can anyone else think of any?

    9. Conservatism is the embrace of pedophilia and worship of the Epstein class. There is nothing left behind those hollow eyes.

USA have turned their hostility towards external enemies into hostility towards the other political side.
This comes with the lack of empathy that USA have traditionally had for external groups, be they slaves or japanese children / civilians.

Conservatives in other nations can technically have love for their nation and love for those who aren’t doing as well. Many of them don’t, some of them do.

Selfish, they are the ones that sold everyone else for them selves. You can hurt everyone else, and now they want the treatment they are denying everyone else

Part of this is that it’s easier to show empathy for people whose situation is visible. It’s why I believe that the UK’s transition to gay marriage via civil partnership worked well. Sure, civil partnership by itself is a poor “separate but equal” policy, but it enabled gay people to openly celebrate their partnerships, and once this was visible, attitudes to gay marriage shifted dramatically, and the legalisation of equal gay marriage (by the Tories, no less) became inevitable.
