There’s some really interesting articles that have been written about this particular period of time. I’m paraphrasing the information , so I apologize if I missed something. A lot of animation is done in Asia. Japan , in particular was going through some sort of economic bubble that was about to burst. The people with the money wanted to spend their money before the bubble burst. Some of them spent money on expensive animation. I know this is particularly true with anime from the time period as well. I know it is somewhat true with these movies in the meme as well.

    2. Probably because they didn’t make enough money for the studios to pursue more flims like it.

Because the movies weren’t doing well enough to continue the effort.

Both Treasure Planet and Atlantis are regarded as cult favourites from Disney.

Treasure planet cost 140 million and only made 107 million back. And Atlantis cost between 90 and 120 million eating 186 back. It would have done better but I was competing with Shrek and Lara Croft Tomb Raider.

    4. Those style of animators unionized and cgi animators at large did not. (I forget the exact details, I just remember that one had unions and cgi did not-at large.)

Since then CGI  artists has made a lot of strides in working conditions and  and union backing

less focus on merch and franchises, more on storytelling and unique styles

Family Guy and other flash based animation programs made shit tons of more money than hand drawn animation.

    7. „American“.

Weren‘t the actual animators hired from Korea and such? „Subletting“ other companies as „work for hire“ diue to copyright staying wirth the contractor? AFAIK this is still common practice for the Simpsons at least.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Computers were invented making it really easy to slop out Disney movies that didn’t actually make a profit.

Too expensive they said, then 3D became too expensive as well so they are looking for AI generated shit.

Idk much about Prince of Egypt and Atlantis, but Treasure Planet was basically killed by Disney themselves

The answer is Shrek, just look at the movies made just before Shrek came out and the movies made after Shrek’s success

are people stupid? Why do they always say, for some reason, the reason is money, it’s always money

Unions. Animators started getting into unions, so companies went with ununionized cgi or whatever

The way I remember it – Titan AE crashed Fox Animation and scared off a lot of investment. Treasure Planet didn’t help. Meanwhile, even the so-so CGI movies were doing great and families would buy tickets just because it was something their kids would love.

    15. Traditional animators unionized around that time. So big companies kinda threw traditional animation under the bus with bad release schedules and marketing so they could transition to the now cheaper to make 3d animation.

2D animation is a hell of a lot more expensive and takes a hell of a lot more time than 3D.

Treasure Planet was lighting in a bottle that they just threw away for some reason!

    18. Sithari___Chaos on

Disney chose to kill it. The animation team unionized so Disney put out zero advertisement for treasure planet and put its release to compete with Harry Potter. And when it wasn’t a massive hit they went “too expensive” and fired them.

    19. Treasure Planet is one of my favorite Disney movies and they purposely wanted it to do bad at the theaters. Never got the love I felt it deserved

      one word : unions

2dartists had unions, 3d artists didn’t have unions

Disney had a handful of back-to-back commercial flops in these films as Pixar was debuting biggies like Toy Story, Bugs Life, Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles during this time. Disney execs started to feel computer animation and 3D style was the future and rolled with it. Acquired Pixar a few years later.

    22. PocketHawket on

Animators unionized and so all the animation studios transitioned 3d animation
