Filipinons practiced a form of “supercision” (a longitudinal slit rather than full removal). This indigenous method, known as “pukpuk”, involved placing the foreskin on a wooden table thingy (languit) and bashing a sharp blade with a wooden mallet to make the incision.
When Islam arrived in the 14th century, it reinforced the practice as a religious requirement (khitan), but the traditional “pukpuk” method remained the primary technique for centuries. Even now in like rural areas, as far as I know, practice it (I got family there).
It wasn’t until the American colonial period and the introduction of modern medicine that the “hospital-style” surgical cut began to replace the traditional “bash” for the majority of the population. Today, the Philippines remains an outlier as a Catholic-majority nation with a nearly 90% circumcision rate.

Circumcision is so fucking stupid. It’s only hygienic insofar that you don’t have to wash your dick. If you bash out all of your teeth you no longer have to brush them. Is that hygienic? Same logic.

Circumcision is stupid af unless under a few conditions.
One is phimosis, if there is no other way to treat it.
The other is if you live in a country with a substantial chance of contracting HIV. I know people have been brainwashed over the years to associate being intact with being “dirty”. That being said there is substantial evidence that men that are circumsized have possibly 2x to 8x less chance of contracting HIV.
As with anything medical you should consult with your healthcare professional to decide what is best for you.
Kinda fascinating that these sorts of things independently cropped up all over.
