Xennial here. It was all about the Choose Your Own Adventure books from the mid to late 80’s for me.

Oh god this post made me think that they stopped doing scholastic book fairs and I was about to be exceedingly sad.
I was in elementary school in the 00s and the book fair was one of the things I looked forward to all friggin year. Our cafeteria/auditorium would be transformed into this wonderland of books and science toys and school supplies and every year I would come home with a mountain of treasures. I’m glad they’re still doing it.
It’s weathered through the decades, but I’m still quite fond of this little book I picked up from a Book Fair during middle school! I’m in my 30s now lol
Whoever the illustrator was, he went absolutely HAM on the illustrations.

They still do it but my daughter almost had to return a book she picked FROM DISPLAY because she was (only) in 6th grade (K-8 school) and it had LGBTQ “content” (mentioned Pride).
It was a whole thing for us but she bought the book.
She doesn’t even bother looking anymore in 8th grade. It’s all dumbed down and not worth it. I’ll buy her whatever damn book she wants.
(Panhandle FL of course)

4th grade it was my turn to go to the fair. I had my envelope of money and I was so excited. I was walking down the hallway and this girl was walking towards me and sneezed in my face. It was about as horrible as you could imagine. She unleashed an unholy amount of snot on me. It wasn’t like she meant to do it either, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ll never forget that moment.

Book fair holds a special place in my childhood memories. But do you have a moment to talk about our lord and savior Sally Foster? Ahhh the magic of becoming an involuntary part-time gift wrap salesman every December. Relatives could see me coming from a mile away with my book full of brightly colored paper samples. Really hope some random kid actually won that go-kart

I live across from an elementary school and there is a bus that shows up about once a month that does the same thing. I can’t help but smile every time I see it and the kids lined up for it. I still remember those Scholastic ads and trying to choose which books I wanted most.

Best days of the year. Also, the day we would get the books we ordered from book catalogues was the tits too. Shout out to Oh Beans! lol
