I think people have a misguided idea of what the troops looked like due to Hollywood, but these guys were as young as 17, drafted at 18, very young, whereas the actors playing them were in their mid-to-late 20’s, maybe early 30’s. In Full Metal Jacket, Matthew Modine (Pvt Joker) was 28, Vincent D’Onofrio (Pvt Pyle) was 27, and Arliss Howard (Pvt Cowboy) was 32.
He was just a child.
