Reminder that while CAS as a force was vital in WW2 for taking out logistics, trucks, etc, the individual kill counts of CAS-aces are some of the biggest Bullshit of the war. badly over-reported

BDA is always over estimated. Always has been, always will be.

CAS rockets launch and bombing are inaccurate so their chances of missing something is high.

Did not Simo Haya have a bunch of kills from artillery strikes as well?

Nothing unites the Allies and the Axis like agreed-upon, imaginary kill counts.

Covers air-to-air victories too. Flyboys are always over-enthusiastic on how they did (even with stringent rules for kills).

First guy strafes and engulfs the target in smoke and fire. Thinks he destroyed the target. He counts the kill
Smoke clears up.

By the end: 5 pilots have counted the same kill on a target that might not even be destroyed.

Same with b17 squadron claiming absurd records
When a German plane was shot down you had like 100 gunner claiming to have shot the plane

They were just destroying them in the pre-improvisation phase. Couldn’t even have been turned into a tank yet, it was already destroyed.

All aces’ kill counts are bullshit whether it be CAS, Air to Air, tanks or snipers. Turns out war is pretty chaotic so you can’t keep a neat and accurate count. Also a reason why you can just easily lie about it, no one is going out there to confirm it so why not exaggerate a bit

There’s some interview of a CAS pilot saying that to kill tanks they – in a dive no less- “bounced 50 cal rounds off the ground to go though the thin armor under the tank” and get the kill.
CAS pilots are deluded in their counts and reality.

Typhoon launches a barrage of rockets at a panzer. Explosion from rockets is massive and makes pilot think he hut the ammo. “Right ‘O, another one for the good guys, eyy chaps.”
2nd Typhoon rolls in as smoke clears, revealing the tank is undamaged. 2nd Typhoon launches a barrage of rockets at the panzer. Explosion from rockets is massive and makes pilot think he hit the ammo. “Right ‘O, another one for the good guys, eyy chaps.”
3rd Typhoon rolls in as smoke clears, revealing the tank is undamaged. 3rd Typhoon launches a barrage of rockets at the panzer. Explosion from rockets is massive and makes pilot think he hit the ammo. “Right ‘O, another one for the good guys, eyy chaps.”
4th Typhoon…. Y’all see where I’m going with this.

Everyone flying over claimed kills by a factor of 2 to 3 as a rule if not higher. So not a CAS specific problem.
