      Interestingly this type of writing is called nasta‘liq and it was Basically formed when Persians took the Arabic script and altered it to fit the Persian language. For a lot of Islamic history this type of persianised Arabic was seen as a high class writing system due to the soft power of Persia .

      If you want a European example it’s kinda like how French was the language of the elite in everywhere from Russia to Germany. Beacuse of this prestige Nastaliq is used quite often for courtly poems and literature as you can see within the case of the Ottoman Empire as well as India!

      To bring this back to the orignal question the inscriptions on the pipe are about a poem that talks about the beauty of tobacco!
