    1. [Alice Roosevelt](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/s/W3c276velF) was the bombastic eldest child of Theodore Roosevelt. From the day her father [ascended](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/s/QaGT7R42vs) to the presidency, she was vaulted to public stardom, maintaining a high profile in Washington D.C. for the rest of her life. If you know anything of her, then you likely know TR’s quote: **”I can either run the country or I can attend to Alice, but I cannot possibly do both.”** And yet, it is the astounding amount of time that she kept relevant after her father’s presidency that is the point of interest I will be overviewing today. She had a habit of making outrageous statements, like when she said she’d “rather vote for Hitler than vote for Franklin (FDR) for a third term”, and a mere 4 years later she was lampooning the Republican candidate Dewey over his “pencil mustache.” Years later she chatted it up with the Kennedys, and once told LBJ that she intentionally wore an enormous hat so that he couldn’t kiss her.

Oh yeah, and there’s the fact that she’s kind of sorta responsible for Nixon getting back into politics by convincing him to not give up after his 1960 loss. Years later in 1972, she was recorded in the Nixon White House tapes panning George McGovern in a conversation with Nixon. She met Gerald Ford, though declined to meet Carter. At her death in 1980, she had met 17 presidents, not counting the multitude of [world leaders](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/26/Queen_Elizabeth_II_of_Great_Britain_Greeting_Alice_Roosevelt_Longworth%2C_Daughter_of_President_Theodore_Roosevelt%2C_in_the_Receiving_Line_on_the_South_Driveway_of_the_White_House_Prior_to_a_State_Dinner_Honoring_He%28…%29_-_NARA_-_12004850.jpg/960px-thumbnail.jpg). All in all, a rather grandiloquent woman. She was simply outrageous, and all that I have said is merely a drop in the pond of anecdotes pertaining to Alice. Regardless of your opinion on her, it is undeniably remarkable for someone to remain THAT relevant for nearly 80 years.

    2. Teddy Roosevelt famously said he could either run the country or control Alice, but not both. He clearly chose the easier job, running the country.
