In 1956, Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal, prompting a secret joint invasion by Britain, France, and Israel to regain control. While militarily successful, the intervention failed due to intense diplomatic and economic pressure from the United States and the Soviet Union. The crisis forced a humiliating withdrawal, signaling the end of British and French global dominance.

    1. You know you’ve messed up when the Americans and Soviets stop pointing nukes at each other just to look at you and say ‘No’.

That awkward moment when the two arch enemies team up to tell you to fuck off.

In the end Israel forced Egypt to open the straits of Tiran, so they got exactly what they wanted (Egypt however, won’t learn the lesson, and will try to do that again in 11 years…and it won’t go nearly as good for them)

Special relationship? Yeah my arse. Things like this signify it. Worked out in the short term though as it turned the public and government off of helping the Yanks in their own fuck up in Vietnam

Everything I’ve ever read about the Suez crisis (which admittedly isn’t everything) paints it as a pretty much total failure to advance American interests both in the region and globally, with the exception of memes on Reddit. Is there something I’m missing here? Seems like it was ultimately a pretty massive Soviet win.

Situation so weird you had the US and USSR to stop the UK, France and Israel from attacking an African nation

    8. Ironically of the three Israel was the only one that got what it wanted hence why their government was the only one to survive unlike both the British and French governments.

Israel forced Egypt to re-open the straits of Tiran for Israeli shipping and allow the presence of UN peacekeepers in the Sinai peninsula.

Meanwhile Britain and France failed at achieving their goals and just got humiliated

      Wait what??

US and USSR agreeing on stopping colonialist powers from invading a sovereign country???? How is this possible

    10. I know this meme gets posted every few days, but it is ironic that the US now faces similar issues of their own making with Iran and the Straits of Hormuz.

      How the turn tables.

    11. You know you fucked up when both the US and USSR knock on the door to tell you to chill out.

    12. And very quickly came to regret the decision on Eisenhower’s part, in private at least.
