    Full story:

    The Chongqing police criminal investigative corps apprehension operations team(重庆市公安局刑事警察总队行动缉捕支队) was a unit responsible for the arrest of dangerous criminals, and was once the main tactical unit of Chongqing.

    In June 2010 during the establishment of the Chongqing counter-terrorism corps(now SWAT corps) the AOT was merged into SWAT.

    Zhang Jun:

    In 1966, Zhang Jun was born in Anxiang county, Hunan; at the mere age of 17(1983), he was put in a junevile detention center due to assault. He was arrested again in 1989;

    The wikipedia article on him is very dogshit, both english and chinese wikipedia so i'll just use this source instead(and this one) in terms of his crimes;

    Between 1991 and september 2001, Zhang and his accomplices robbed multiple stores, banks, security vehicles along with hijacking taxis and running through a highway checkpoint, where they many people(i'm too lazy to count, and i don't trust the wikipedia articles); His first murders were in April 1993 when he shot two prostitutes after acquiring his first firearm(china did not have gun control until 1996)

    His last and most notorious robbery was in September 1, 2000, when Zhang and two accomplices(all masked) robbed a cash transport vehicle in changde, murdering three "economic police"(pre-2007 name for private security) and two bank employees, stealing two submachine guns and 20 rounds of ammo; a nearby taxi driver was also shot by the masked men; even while escaping, the masked men continued to open fire on civilians, killing one and injuring three more(including a 3 year old girl).

    In September 18, chongqing police captured one of Zhang's girlfriends, which gave out Zhang's location to police. He was arrested the next day; during his capture, Zhang reached for a firearm but was tackled before he could do so. Police then found a type 54 pistol on him. (interrogation footage of zhang if you want). His accomplices were soon arrestted

    In April 21, 2001, the Chongqing 1st Municipal People's court sentenced Zhang to death(photo). He was executed May 20 that year.

    His last words were "I lost fair and square, now i die fair and square"(我输得心服口服,我死得心服口服) (心服口服's official translation is "convinced" but it's more used in a context where someone admits they lost fair and square)

      Some intresting facts about the case:

      * Zhang Jun was interrogated by Wen Qiang, the then deputy police chief of chongqing. during the interrogation, Zhang told Wen he would end up like him. Nine years later, Wen Qiang was arrested for corruption and having ties to organized crime along with rape. He was sentenced to death in July 2010 and was the first department level(provincial level police) police chief to be sentenced to the caes
      * May 20, the day Zhang Jun was executed, is now called “Chinese valentines day”(thanks to 5-20(五二零) sounding like I love you in chinese), which is very ironic considering his girlfriend ratted him out. However this trend only began mid-late 2000s so the judge wouldn’t have known at the time.

    2. Interesting. In the west we hear very little about crime in China, with the exception of financial/industrial espionage.  I’m sure China has their own versions of Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone, and so on, but just not as well knowing the west. Thanks.
