i come from somewhere that black squirrels are normal so i find this charming

They were all over my college campus. The grey squirrels would attack them and you’d see some of them walking around all mangled with half a tail. Pretty sad tbh

Very cool! My hometown has a population of white squirrels that are very normal to me, but really take visitors by surprise 😂

Plenty of places have more black squirrels than grey ones. White ones are fairly common too in some places.

Just pray you don’t run into the red squirrels. Squirrel equivalent of an angry old man.

I love black squirrels! They were not around where I grew up. I moved north and they are where I live now, and even saw one in my backyard a few months ago! THEN I learned they’re all the same squirrels, its just a melani mutation. They can be anywhere but just populate certain places for whatever reason.

I was in the park one day and sent a video of a cute squirrel to my friend in the UK. He freaked out because he’d never seen a black squirrel before, and I didn’t realize they weren’t normal everywhere.

I love the black squirrels of Kent state. They’re just like regular squirrels but can run a little faster and jump a little higher.

Where I’m from we have more black squirrels than any other kind. There’s a family of them that live in the tree in my backyard. We also have the little red ones, those guys are intense.

squirrels with black fur are a genetic mutation of other common squirrel species. iirc, since its genetic, you’ll have some regions with a lot of them while other regions have next to none.

There are black squirrels all over Michigan.

I love them. The first college I went to and lived on campus had black squirrels and I would try to get very close. One came up to me eventually and I felt like I won the lottery that day lol

Near me it’s about 50/50 black / gray. We actually call these squir-el’s instead. We assume they are different families, so we gotta put respect on their names.
Veeery rarely we see a red one but that’s about 1/1000

Are they not usually black?? Most my squirrel spotting has been in Korea and I’m sure they’re mostly a very dark brown like that. So to me, squirrels are dark.
I saw one in DC in 1984. The docent at the Museum of Natural History told me they’re from Canada.

There’s this little urban legend in Palo Alto that the squirrels in the area (majority black) are actually survivors of some failed EEG experiment from the ’70s at Stanford. Totally fake.. but it’s even documented on Stanford Magazine as a joke.
They’re feisty little frisky furballs

I have one in my yard, it’s my favorite. I’ve heard totally unconfirmed lore that they came to this area (western MA) because some guy in Westfield was studying them and they escaped. I grew up an hour away in CT and never saw one before moving here so I choose to believe all black squirrels in MA made a jail break.

They are all over my yard. I have both black and grey in and around my house. Not special, I think they are the same as grey just black,
