Idk why this is always presented as fact. No one does this but tech bros and attorneys.

I do periodically check emails on vacation and even had calls when my input was needed.
But my over $200k salary is also around $60-70k higher compared to similar positions in European companies.

Don’t think so. I’d rather say it depends on your job whether you have to be available or not.

She might not be on vacation, some people that work from home can literally work on the beach. My bosses have worked from Florida before since they don’t have a building they go to. It’s cheaper for our company to just not rent a building.

Cause at most companies in America when you take time off, your work doesn’t shift to another person. You come back from a two week vacation and now you’re two weeks behind, at least that’s been my experience as an engineer. Even though we have “coverage plans” and people that are light on work, you come back and nothing has moved forward

My mom has done this for years she sits on the beach with her laptop, rarely does she actually have to do anything as she’s a supervisor but has to always be available regardless.

This is the most recent out of office auto reply I used:
I will be out of the office most of this week, returning Friday. If you have completed the 17-step Urgent Matter Assessment documentation and had it approved by the Is It Though? committee, please reach out to Sarah. If you don’t know who Sarah is or how to contact her, then your matter has been pre-determined to not be urgent.
When I return on Friday, I will likely delete all my emails that were delivered in my absence. It’s easier that way

One thing I loved about setting up my work email back at my old Army Unit was the “I’m on leave message.” You set that auto message to everyone in the whole Unit and just watch the fire burn in the group chat occasionally without responding back lol. It was especially fun since I was a 1 man section for the entire 3 years there lmfao.

My bf got hurt at work and had to get major surgery. When he went to talk to his work about the time he would be out they said he had no vacation days and not enough PTO. After 2 yrs everyone got 2 weeks of vacation time but somehow he worked for them for almost 3 yrs and didn’t get it. When he had the surgery they asked him constantly when he would be back. He ended up going back for he was fully ready.

Not me! Teams is muted/disabled and outlook shortcut is deleted and never checked. I don’t even TOUCH work when on PTO.

Not this American! If I’m not on the clock then I don’t exist as far as my employer is concerned. My boss and a very small handful of others have my cell for an honest-to-God emergency. In 26 years I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been contacted outside of work hours. My personal time is sacred.

It’s true. I can go away for three weeks and not feel the need to think about work or do anything related to it. Why would I?

Huh, as a European this kind of offends me. I’m chronically on my phone and mail, even when on vacation far away from home

It’s your own fault, Americans. Whether you like it or not, you are the work culture that you are in, it’s something you create together.

This is something I love about my country. I get 5 weeks of paid vacation straight out of University. And when I have taken my time off, on the next pay day I get some extra compensation, called holiday pay along side my full salary. I went skiing in march, was out of office for 5 days and got $300 extra for it 🤣

Without going into detail, my SO has a job where she’s forbidden from taking her work phone or laptop out of the country. Problem solved.
