In 1896, Cléo de Mérode became one of the first modern celebrities when she performed in Berlin and was falsely rumored to be romantically involved with King Leopold II of Belgium. The gossip exploded across Europe, making her image widely circulated in postcards and the press.

During the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, she was one of the most famous performers, embodying the Belle Époque ideal of beauty and elegance. Her appearance and style influenced fashion trends, especially her signature center-parted hairstyle.

In 1926, she published her memoir “Le Ballet de ma vie” (“The Ballet of My Life”), where she addressed rumors about her life and career, defended her reputation, and offered insight into the world of late 19th-century performance and celebrity culture.
