Edit: oh, so it looks like people are mad that the movie focuses on the success of his career and leaves out the family drama and what not. I want expecting that, but isn’t there already a movie that explains all that? I remember watching that growing up.

What is important about this? There have been all black cast and black director movies before

It might be because I’m over biopics, or it may be because the Jacksons mini-series from nearly 35 years ago* still gets regular airplay on VH1 or BET, but I have very little desire to see this. I’m all about supporting Black filmmakers, but this one just does nothing for me.
*Apparently 1992 was 34 years ago and 7 years ago at the same time.
God if the boondocks was still around the amount of shit they can called out just for the Michael Jackson movie,……

I don’t think the original tweet is framing it as a revolution vs pointing out the fact that if you want to see more Black films being made you have to support the Black films in theaters. We can’t complain about Tyler Perry being the only Black director options when we don’t support the other Black films that are released.

If I wanted to watch a poorly-review Michael Jackson movie, I’d just watch The Wiz for the 15th time

Miles Teller isn’t black lmao
These movies are written for white people who want to remember the feeling the music gave them and get a shallow surface level history lesson
Nothing wrong with that but it has nothing to do with the black community

For me, it depends entirely on the movie. Michael looks like a bad movie but also not particularly innovative. Meanwhile, you motherfucking bet my ass was in the theater for Sinners. Movie not only looked great but it was a speculative fiction fantasy movie written and directed by a black man, who also happens to be one of the best creators in Hollywood today.

To be fair, it’s hard to top The Jacksons: An American Dream. I know series vs movie, but it’s hard to look at the trailers and not think that this movie is just a washed out version of something done better in the 90s.

We gotta stop supporting Michael and his estate though and accept that he was a predator which is why he slowest deteriorated into a shell of a man, died, and if there was a hell he’d be burning in it for abusing children.

I’d rather support local than Amazon, but if my local option is shit, I’m not gonna blindly support it either.

You could go watch You, Me, and Tuscany, if you want to support Black leads and a female Black director!

I can’t get with idolizing Michael Jackson even if watching the movie inadvertently supports a bunch of regular people.
