2000 years old Roman cavalry spatha found in Częstochowa, Poland. Bit surprising find because it is for from the edge of Roman Empire. There is amber road going through Poland at this time. Sword broken in 3 places indicating funeral.[1200×1600]

    1. Either it was traded or kept by it’s original owner who served as an auxiliary soldier in the Roman army and returned home afterwards. Could also be a spoil of war.

      But we have to forget our today’s concept of borders, the limes wasn’t dividing, it was connecting. So Roman units leading expeditions or just going onto a trade journey where one had died en route wouldn’t be that far off
