That’s so cool! Did you figure out the wiring yourself? Or is there a guide somewhere?

My dad has an entire vintage phone booth hooked up and working in the basement. They were replacing them at his work in the 90’s and he somehow talked them into letting him keep one.

What’s really mildly interesting is that you still have a home phone

this is so cool but also feels oddly emotional 😭 I found an old payphone once that still worked and for some reason I actually used it… hearing that sound and holding the receiver felt so different, like I was stepping into someone else’s life for a minute. ever since then I’ve had this weird fascination with “older” ways of doing things, like they carry a kind of weight that modern stuff doesn’t anymore

But how do you keep it authentic? Do you have 20 strangers coming and spitting into the receptor every week or so?

Omg this is sweet!
So is it set up as a hard land line, or were you able to hijack your cell number?
I’ll never forget calling up AT&T to get rid of the land line, that back in the day, meant adulthood.

Poof. Just like that. No thanks for being a bazillion year customer, nothing.

my grandparents have one and i thought it was the coolest thing as a kid. they ended up disconnecting it though because they were getting so many spam calls and the ringer on the payphone was wayyy louder than their regular landline phone

I need to do this with my pay phone. Did you hook it up to a standard phone line or VOIP?

So this payphone has been rewired by me to bypass the original programming and end in an RJ-22 jack. I have removed the locks and money dropped in goes directly into the change return. I have it hooked up to the VOIP I use for my home phone.
Edit: since it keeps being mentioned. I’m also the one who cleaned and disinfected it lol
