technically you only need the wood in the shape of a chair in this picture to make the chair
SheepWolves on
The artist used a half log to make the chair and so this is the chair and the all the offcuts and chips. Not sure the point they’re trying to get to as the amount of off cuts and scraps is the result of the chair design.

Very misleading

And all of those wood are organic which could be further utilized into something else. Unlike a plastic chair.

Listen i have seen both traditional and industrial methods of making chairs and now this, this is by far the most wasteful way to mak a chair I have ever seen, I know the message artist is trying to convey is of waste ecology and most likely human greed, but what they conveyed instead is that they suck at carpentry and should never be allowed near it.
Felix_Von_Doom on
Whoever was the creator of this particular chair is a gratuitous waster of material.

Feels like you could make 5 more chairs from the leftovers. If the “artist” wants to make the point that chairs are wasteful, maybe they should have… honestly, I have no idea. The whole thing feels stupid.

So, they just put the off-cuts and chips/sawdust in front of it? Did they mention, in their statement, that most of what’s not used to make the chair can then be used for something else?

So what? Lumber leftovers are never wasted

Its an art installation.
It is not a tutorial or the most efficient way to make a chair out of wood.

You should buy from local producers. Those guys will customize your chair to your needs, almost never waste any material, and offer you repair services too.

Great visual, but 90% of what is laid out has other uses and is not waste by any means.

people are calling this wasteful, but I don’t see why. The rest can be used as fire wood. Those small pieces especially are great for getting a fire started

idiot wasted wood trying to make a chair without a seat. I’m betting he didn’t even make it and just bought the chair and tossed random bits of wood together.
PokerBear28 on
So an artist, who apparently knows very little about carpentry and wood working, made a “chair” with no seat or arms, wasted an ton of wood in the process, and is trying to make a point? What’s the point? That they suck at wood working?

That is what you get for ask that to someone from Arts instead of a propper carpenter.
That would be like taking down an entire oak to make one wooden spoon.
