Ah yes, Confederate propaganda

Man this has been coming up a lot more lately. It’s so remarkable for how incredibly crappy it is.
And I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, even as Lost Cause propaganda it’s absolute shit, so much so I almost suspect it wasn’t intentional. Which is hilarious to me.
Like okay, the movie is a handjob to Thomas Jackson, fine, but it basically cuts to the mythology of how he got his nickname, then like…Skips over his Shenandoah Valley Campaign, which is like a hidden gem of a guerilla campaign to follow and more affirming of his quality than the mythology started at First Bull Run.
It skips over the Peninsula Campaign, Antietam…Like I get it, the movie is already a honking four hours, but it’s four hours of wooden dialogue and schlock drama that serves more to make it sympathetic to the slave owning bastards. Even if it was for irony purposes, that just doesn’t seem to be apparent, which is probably being far too generous to begin with.
It’s not just Lost Cause propaganda, it’s basically taking a huge dump on the subject it chose to be a vehicle for that propaganda.

Gettysburg is still peak tho despite Maxwell’s cringefest with this.

This movie is kind of boring and a lost cause movie, but I wouldn’t write it off completely. If you even thought about watching this or Gettysburg you’re probably interested in the historical aspect. This gives a good layout of Stonewall Jackson’s campaigns and the early to middle part of the Civil war and a good performance by Stephen Lang. Just if you’re looking at any scene that’s not a battle or generals standing around a table talking strategy take it with a grain of salt, it’s probably bullshit.

Stephen Lang playing Stephen Lang in Stephen Lang as Stonewall Jackson.
This movie (among other things) was such an ego-stroke for Lang.

Why do I get more aura from John C Reilly playing a ghost version of Stonewall in Anchorman 2 than I get from this movie deliberately made to make him look cool?

I still feel bad for that soldier whose water bottle got shot. He could be dangerously thirsty!

“Remember guys, propaganda is only cool when it’s from our side!”
Propaganda is history, and as such it deserves to be remembered and studied…for what it is and for how it shaped the beliefs of the people of its day.
This movie was actually really interesting and enjoyable to watch…history is always written by the victors, and so often you never get to see the propaganda established by the loosing side.
Do you ever wonder why so many southern Americans choose to fight and die in a war that they had no stake in? Because this movie is exactly how it was preached to them…they weren’t fighting and dying so some rich family in George could own slaves, to them they were protecting their homes and their liberty.
This movie does an excellent job of portraying how the war and its leaders were portrayed and viewed by the average confederate soldier, and it’s highly fascinating.

A shame the movie turned out as horrible as it did because the seeds of a great movie were there. Lang’s performance was genuinely good and Robert freaking Duval should have killed it as Lee.

What the fuck was Stephen Lang doing in this piece of shit

Tbh Stephen Lang was easily the best thing about that movie, and he also stole the show as Pickett in Gettysburg.
