We have a lot of these in Western NC. Ive seen brake shoes popping out of trucks like a PEZ dispenser going down some of these mountains

    2. He handled that messed up situation perfectly. Also he is lucky that runaway truck lane was right there. They don’t have those everywhere.

    3. This location looks rather familiar. If it’s on I5, I’ve been there and have seen a truck use it. I’ve also seen a not as lucky truck in the gulch between the lanes.

I didn’t even know runaway ramps were a thing until I moved to the east coast

    5. Is anyone able to educate me on why you wouldn’t start downshifting through the gears to engine brake and slow down?

Wouldn’t stop you completely, but it’s safer than 90mph right?

    6. It’s mindblowing to think the bored road construction crew who laid all that sand, has saved this guys life.

Saw this happen in WV. All of a sudden there’s a truck next to me, then there wasn’t. Briefly saw the aftermath of the truck hitting a ramp and barrier to slow the down, then around a bend I went.

      I hope that guys ok.

When he started on the emergency ramp I thought he was going to run out of runway.

Huh, all the truck gravel traps I’ve seen start at road grade, then slope upward. Looked like this guy was almost out of ramp.

God bless the engineer that invented this. My FIL was a career car hauler and he lost his brakes in AZ so he had to use one of these. While my MIL and FIL were both shaken up pretty good, it saved their lives. No question about it.

    11. I thought runaway ramps were supposed to slope upwards, I’ve never seen one that sloped down like this. Glad to see it still worked out fine though, pretty interesting.

They have those safety exits like that in Virginia except the ones I’ve seen are at the bottom of the hill like a exit ramp.

    13. Those things would stop a car in like a 100ft, all that inertia from the truck took way longer than I expected. Just shows how much energy they are managing.

    14. My dad was OTR doing long hauls and he had to use one of these in the Rockies.

Hearing him talk about it was the only time Ive ever seen him shook.

I was driving through rural Tennessee once and saw a family having a picnic lunch on a runaway ramp like this.

Fucking amazing how effective those emergency lanes are for runaway trucks.
