Context: in the 1500s in order to roast meat evenly over an open fire, the task usually fell to the lowly kitchen boy, but hours of turning the spit caused blisters in their hands. So they decided to make a whole new breed of dogs to replace them. Thus we have the Turnspit dog or Vernepator Cur, Latin for “the dog that turns the wheel”.
And that’s their whole purpose, to run on hours on end in a hot kitchen to turn a spit. The Turnspit dog would become an integral part of the kitchen, especially in larger kitchen where there would be multiple dogs taking shifts, and for nearly 400 years, up until the Industrial Revolution when machine started taking their place. From then on the Turnspit dog began diapering from kitchen across England and eventually disappeared all together as they all went extinct.
