So, adjusted for inflation, that would be $1.50 per roll in 2026 dollars.
I recently paid 79 cents for a “mega roll”, and we are going to be generous and assume the Scott tissue 1931 rolls were as fluffy as a 2026 “mega roll”.
This means the real cost of toilet paper has decreased by nearly half over the interceding (almost) 100 years.
If the 1931 rolls were skimpier than today’s “mega roll”, then the cost has pretty much decreased by half.
That’s a bit of good news I’ll bet nobody was expecting. 🙂
Another way of looking at this:
An average US worker in 1931 would have to work 8.57 minutes to earn a roll of toilet paper.
An average US worker in 2026 must work for 1.26 minutes to earn a roll of toilet paper.
By this metric, the cost for this product in labor hours has dropped dramatically.

Scottissue in particular was known as having the fewest splinters. Seriously. Heard that then confirmed it with people who used it pre 1940.
