Zeus kidnapped persephone and sent her to hades. She ate pomegranate seeds which normally would mean she has to stay forever, but hades broke the rules and let her return to the living world. This is also why we get the weather because persephone’s mother, demeter, is the goddess of harvest and nature and stuff and when her daughter is in hell she gets mad and turns the weather to shit.
