My whole life I have been a humanist first and foremost. My belief that everyone, no matter what, is still a person and that that deserves at least some form of respect and dignity had been unshakable. Not forgiveness, or even empathy per se, but that our ineffable human essence should not be degraded in any sense.
Trump doesn’t have it.
I can’t look at Trump or the people he surrounds himself with and believe that anymore. I hate them. I didn’t think I was capable of true hatred. But I look at him and his sycophants and I don’t see humans. I have hatred in my heart now, and I feel like a lesser person because of it. It makes me hate them all the more.
One could do whatever one were compelled to do to any one of them and I wouldn’t flinch. That scares me. That someone could be so blatantly anti-human right to my face that it damages my own humanity.
