    1. My twin uncles were born in 1939, but one was lying in a position that made it impossible to hear the fetal heartbeat.

Like many twins for decades to come, they were given matching names. The first one born was Jon and a few minutes later, Don was born. I asked my mother what her parents’ reactions were. She said, “Mother was thrilled, but Daddy went out and got drunk.”

It’s worth mentioning that my grandfather didn’t make much money at that time; my grandmother was a SAHM like many women of her generation were.
