Svante Pääbo’s pioneering work in ancient DNA (aDNA) was famously challenged by contamination, including his own DNA, which he discovered in early studies. While investigating Egyptian mummies in the 1980s, Pääbo realized that DNA fragments he isolated were modern, having been contaminated by the laboratory environment rather than coming from the ancient samples.
It reminds me about how in the 2000s or so the EU was looking for this criminal mastermind that kept committing crimes all across Europe with no pattern or anything to link the crimes together only to find out that the DNA was from a woman who worked at the Q-tip factory that they were using to collect the DNA
