Wikipedia is the only ex that constantly begs for money and I actually feel bad for saying no.

    2. The guilt I feel clicking ‘Maybe later’ is heavier than the entire physical set of Encyclopedia Britannica.

    3. They already have more than enough money for the next decade by the way. They do not need to ask for donations but do anyway. Sure, Wikipedia is helpful so it’s better than giving it to other corporations but you don’t need to feel bad for not donating.

Oh no, the most massive depositary of human knowledge to ever exist asks for small donations to remain independent, free to access, and add free, the horror!

    5. I’ll donate the exact same amount of effort I put into checking their primary sources. So, zero.

    6. It’s clear you never gave them money, if you did they also send you emails begging for more… don’t know man, but after been used to train nearly every language model, shouldn’t be them the ones paying to wiki?

    7. please donate if you use it, with obvious caveats about checking sources, it really is a helpful resource

I give once a year. it’s one of the few donations i make. I encourage anyone who can to do the same.

    9. I did the first year I saw them asking. Then le next year I saw how ideology replaced accurate information and decided not to support them anymore.

    10. they don’t freaking need any money.

      * they have $296.6 million in reserves + a $169.4 million endowment
      * the cost to run their servers is less than $4 million per year
      * but they spent $100 million on staff salaries

Unless you want wikipedia owned and funded by the oligarchy, we need to fund it.

    12. You can also buy Wikipedia merch. I got a tiny notebook and a pin from their website.

Wikipedia after I open one tab for a quick fact and end up 27 tabs deep.

    14. This is gonna get downvoted but you all should do some research into the Wikipedia situation. They have more than enough money to keep the site running and it’s likely that there is a certain level of corruption happening with these funds behind the scenes.

There are some good YouTube videos that delve into this topic but my lazy ass can’t be bothered to link them. They’re there if you’re interested in learning more though.

If I had the money I would donate every time. We should do anything in our power to keep them independent

I totally would have if they weren’t guilty of vandalizing articles to fit their ideals

They’re one of the few companies I donate to every year. Well worth the money.

I don’t know about any one else, but I get the birthday globe that turns into a disco ball version when tapped. Yes on mobile.

If all the LLM’s even provided just 1% of their budget to donating to Wikipedia for using their website. Wikipedia would never ask for a donation again.

I’ve got that monthly payment set up. It always makes me feel good when I get notified that the payment went through

    21. In a world where everyone has an agenda and objective facts are hard to come by, Wikipedia is a beacon of truth, and they are the only website I visit I actually want to donate to.

I periodically give money. They helped me through university. It’s the least I can do.

Be among the few people that donate to Wikipedia, one of the only good websites around anymore.

    24. They’re funded for years at this point. They don’t need the money, they *want* it.
