After an accident, at least six people were killed and 72 were wounded in the explosion at one of Russia’s largest petrochemical facilities. Damage was reported up to 8 km away. The Nizhnekamskneftekhim Taneko oil refinery produces ~35% of the world’s isoprene rubber and appears heavily damaged.

      However, on Russian social media, there are many reports that the number of casualties was severely underreported and may be much higher.

      While the incident was initially reported as a possible Ukrainian attack, it could instead be the result of lax security and delayed maintenance. This comes after a series of Ukrainian strikes that have damaged multiple Russian oil refineries.

      Ukraine studied Sun Tzu well: it practices a perfect war of attrition, death by a thousand cuts. Russia has zero advances on the front line in Ukraine, and keeps losing its economic base. Each strike is just one cut…

      For those curious what products use Isoprene rubber now that 1/3rd of it is in limbo.

      * **Tires**:
      * **Isoprene rubber** is a major component in **tire manufacturing**, especially in **passenger car tires**, **truck tires**, and **aircraft tires**. Its combination of **elasticity**, **abrasion resistance**, and **high tensile strength** makes it ideal for maintaining tire performance under different driving conditions.
      * **Footwear**:
      * **Shoe soles** are commonly made from isoprene rubber because of its **durability**, **comfort**, and **resilience**. It offers a good balance of **traction** and **cushioning**, making it ideal for everyday footwear and specialized applications like sports shoes.
      * **Gaskets and Seals**:
      * **Isoprene rubber** is often used in **gaskets**, **seals**, and **O-rings** that need to provide a tight seal under varying conditions. It helps prevent leakage in automotive, industrial, and plumbing applications.
      * **Rubber Bands**:
      * Rubber bands, often made from **natural isoprene rubber**, benefit from its **elastic properties**, making them durable and able to return to their original shape after being stretched.
      * **Medical Devices**:
      * **Isoprene rubber** is sometimes used in **medical applications** such as **catheters**, **rubber gloves**, and **elastic bands** due to its **biocompatibility** and **flexibility**.
      * **Consumer Goods**:
      * **Isoprene rubber** is used in **elastic materials**, such as **balloons**, **elastic fabrics**, and **rubber-coated materials**.
      * **Adhesives**:
      * Because of its excellent **adhesion properties**, isoprene rubber can be used in certain **adhesive formulations** that require strong bonding capabilities, especially in products like **contact cement** or **tapes**.

    4. Is that 35% number true? Thought Russia was sanctioned, would that not include products like this?

    5. The top uses of this type of rubber are: Vehicle Tires and Shoes. Other uses: Medical Gloves, elastic bands, UV films/coatings, perfumes

      For those like me who don’t know what isoprene rubber is used for…

      Isoprene rubber (synthetic polyisoprene) is a high-performance, elastic polymer widely used as a direct, non-allergenic replacement for natural rubber in tires, medical devices (gloves, catheters), and industrial components. Its high resilience and tensile strength make it ideal for gaskets, seals, vibration mounts, footwear soles, and adhesive formulations.

    7. I know for a fact that every single person here skipped over that name while reading this lol

      Ukraine attacks Russian oil so Europe can’t get gas and oil from Russia, and America and israel attack Iran which causes the closure of the strait of Hormuz, the destruction of gulf Arab oil refineries, and oil fields, which Europe really needs, sucks to be in Europe right now.

    9. It is great to see that we destroy around 30% of global supply of critical materials and disrupt live of billions because of 3-4 retirement age guys.

    10. Dude, if you can see that smoke plume, you are too close. Everyone that is near that needs to get as far away as possible until the flames have been extinguished.

      2026 sucks just as much as the previous 6 years, so far…

      The refinery at Port Arthur, TX recently exploded again, and it was just shite management that lets problems recur. I reckon Russian management is not always great. I hope it is a Ukraine attack though.

      From Kyiv Independent:

      “The company said the incident was caused by an “equipment malfunction.” One person reportedly was killed, and around 50 others were injured, they added.

      Russian media and Telegram channels reported that a fire broke out at an outdoor pumping unit, spreading across roughly 1,500 square meters.

      At the same time, aviation authorities temporarily restricted air traffic at a nearby airport, while monitoring channels reported a drone threat in the region.”

      It does have that new drone smell.

    13. Russia will say it was damaged by “falling debris after a successful interception.”

      Yeah, the payload was successfully intercepted all right.

      Just not with air defense.
