The Scythians were the steppe nomad culture that dominated the Eurasian steppes roughly 700-300 BCE — the same people whose extraordinary gold artifacts make up one of the Hermitage’s most prized collections. Pozen was fascinated by that history and this piece captures the thing the Scythians were most feared for — mounted archery at full gallop, the original horse archers of the ancient world.
