KPD: ‘We want a Soviet-style council republic!’ SPD: ‘Best I can do is a right-wing paramilitary death squad’.

Good thing the SPD won. Because as we all know, the Weimar Republic was a totally stable and not at all broken government that-

      *turns page in history book*

-handed power over to the Nazis all of a decade later.

Meanwhile, NSDAP sitting back and watching the slug fest between true leftists and the real true leftists still going on 100 years later

The point here isn’t to decide which one was “correct” to inadvertently assist the rise of Hitler.

The point is WHATEVER reasons either one had, they were wrong. Same with the asshole conservatives. There was one enemy to civilization, and EVERYBODY failed to unite to stop it.

      THAT’s the point.

People always talk about leftist infighting, but it seems like it is always the communists causing it. We should really come up with a new name for it.

In my book, Friedrich Ebert and Gustav Noske are the unsung heroes who saved Germany from Bolshevism.

the SPD were supposed to be socialists but not only did they not support the socialist revolution, they threw their weight behind the capitalist government and armed the proto-fascists for them to put down the revolution and slaughter socialists and labor organizers. That’s where the betrayal comes from. Imagine if half the American founding fathers switched to siding with the British and armed loyalist armies because they thought reforming their way to independence would be better than a revolution

Remember kids, the Reddit liberals are telling you that the SDP, which along with every other liberal and Conservative Party, voted for and caused WW1 and led to the slaughter of 20+ million are the “good guys” and the KDP was “authoritarian” and “bad.”

SPD: *Is formed to carry out social revolution.

KPD: *Tries to carry out social revolution.

SPD: *Sides with right wing paramilitaries to crush social revolution.

Yes, it’s very hard to see how the SPD betrayed the revolution isn’t it.

The main issue or argument was that the KPD and SPD were both socialist. The conditions for a revolution were very clearly met, GIVEN THAT THERE ALREADY WERE SEVERAL REVOLUTIONS in Germany at the time. Instead of continuing a revolution and giving power and democracy to workers, the SPD basically just removed the Kaiser and then strengthened elections somewhat, and then fought any attempt to further revolution. Again, given they were a SOCIALIST PARTY, you think they would have supported the worker actions instead of backing the bourgeois and counter-revolution.

(oh also the way they killed Luxembourg and other spartacists was absurdly harsh where they drag their bodies through the streets).

    12. Idk I feel like I probably wouldn’t support a party that had previously murdered my party’s leaders but I guess I’m weird like that

    13. CrownedLime747 on

From what I heard Rosa Luxemberg wanted to wait until at least after the election, but her co-leader and the rest of the party overruled her

    14. enthusiasm_gap on

The SPD rose to power by explicitly promising to lay the groundwork for socialist revolution. That revolution came, twice, and both times the SPD betrayed the true believers *who put them into power* by aligning with the far right to murder them.

I mean the Spd sold out to the German establishment, they didn’t neef to bring the old imperials back, or allow them to organize or let them in government. Like the spd had won and the midst of winning they decided to ally with the freikcorps

    16. MauschelMusic on

The KPD were building more democratic, responsive council democracy. The SPD wanted to force the people back to bourgeois rule through bourgeois representative “democracy” within a narrow political window that excluded anyone to their left.

Like I’ve seen some pretty derpy misrepresentations of the struggle by SPD defenders in the past, but this is one of the derpiest. Of course, I wouldn’t expect transparency from the side who brutally murdered the workers and then a little later, magnanimously forgave the fash for their coup attempt. It’s clear where your loyalties lie. Every neo-Nazi should have a bust of Friedrich Ebert, who made it all possible.

The real ones know the real betrayal began in 1914. What was the legitimate claim to overthrow the Kaiser?

    18. If you ask me the KPD was wrong in demanding a revolution that overthrew the new Republic. Not only because they would eventually become a Russian satellite state but also because by trying to overthrow the Republic they just proved the conservatives and reactionaries who claimed they were a threat and needed to be purged right.

The SPD however wether it was because they were backed into a corner or didn’t see the old order too much of a threat were far too lenient to the reactionaries. They essentially allowed everyone back into the government with all of their old influence as if nothing had ever happened.

In the end however both failed to unite against the NSDAP. If you ask me, the KPD was more at fault by the end. I don’t blame them for not trusting the SPD (wether they still wanted a revolution was right or wrong is a diffrent discussion) but by that point they didn’t just refuse to collaborate with the SPD because of their mistrust, they intended to fully bring democracy down and saw to it that the centre collapsed.

In the end the SPD and KPD supporters sat together in the concentration camp and died a miserable death because they were too blind to see the humanity in each other and the cruelty in the hearts of the nazis.

Even if you are a SPD supporter, you have to admit the SPD was WAAAYY too lenient with the reactionaries. The Weimar constitution was heavily flawed, even from a liberal perspective.

    20. Oh, c’mon. It’s not like the KPD collaborated with the Nazis in key political decisions to undermine the SPD government.

What i enjoy with this sub is the clear lack of historical knowledge by most people here. I know it’s memes but litteraly the KPD didn’t start the uprising, it was the USPD, the KPD is treated by some as a proto stalinist vanguard party when the people who became stalin mouthpieces afterwards were at that point members of the USPD and many KPD members of 1918-1919 were latter expelled from the KPD because they weren’t stalinists.

It’s impressive how much this series of memes are wrong.
