Animals usually hide away for long periods and in strange, isolated places when they’re not doing so well.
Regardless, looks like they should accept the circumstances and adjust the space to accommodate the animal. Thats his/her shelf now.

Denning is pretty normal behavior for dogs, especially when napping. They want someplace they can feel safe. If not with you, they will find a spot to den. This dog chose the pantry.

If he has a kennel you can drape a blanket over it to create the same cave effect. Little guy would probably even like a cardboard box with a blanket over it. Sometimes they like to have a little den of their own that’s their safe place.
