So I work at a hardware store as the primary forklift driver and I have to fork numerous pallets of soil, bark, concrete, etc around the exterior of the building to stock them. This also includes going through the parking lot. Tall pallets require me to make entire trips in reverse so I go slow to make sure I have full 360 awareness and let cars and pedestrians pass me if they’re ahead of me. I’m hauling a lot of mass that rocks back and forth so I try not to panic break to keep balance. Getting behind a parked car is the most nerve-wracking part because in 15 seconds, someone can get into their car, start it, and start backing out. I see a lot of these fuckers don’t even look first before the tires start rolling. Doesn’t matter if they’re old or young, clearly they assume they have the right of way or there’s simply no ongoing traffic so they shift and immediately let off the break while their heads are still facing the windshield. I can clearly see through their windows that they can’t be bothered to check first.
I make sure my horn always functions before going out there.
