Out of a population of 3 million, which was savage, then what followed was an apartheid-like regime where only Jews and Europeans had citizenship, and worst of all, a lot of french loanwords in Modern Algerian Arabic

That’s a massive range for the estimated losses.

Then leave after a century not before dropping some nukes in the desert without communicating the authorities of what in the future consolidated as the government of Algeria.

I remember hearing a story from an Algerian, who said his ancestors wish they’d been under British occupation like Egypt. Because the French made the British look kind by comparison.
As a Brit I hear no end about what we did. But other colonial powers did things just as awful, or in some cases, like this one, much worse.

When you look at the before.
>In March 1786, Jefferson and John Adams went to London to negotiate with Tripoli’s envoy, ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman (or Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). When they enquired “concerning the ground of the pretensions to make war upon nations who had done them no injury”, the ambassador replied: It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once
It doesn’t leave a lot of room for a nuanced approach

Probably felt they had to compete with the Barbary Pirates numbers, guess they didn’t quite make it. Shame on them.

And all this started so Charles the X could have a short easy war for some good election PR.
It was not short, or easy, and did not help in the election.
So good going there Charles

Maybe don’t practice slavery next time and kidnap millions of people to castrate them and enslave them. I say nice job France, good riddance.

If you spend three centuries raiding, raping and taking slaves all across the Mediterranean and part of the Atlantic you don’t get to complain when the violence is turned on you.
Edit: Some of y’all are so deep into anti-colonialism that are incapable of recognizing evil if it doesn’t come with a pale skin.
Edit2: Look at what you’ve done. You are making me defend the French.

European colonisation stopped the Barbary slave trade is probably one of the darker humours in human history.
