Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Williams would visit pediatric wards in cities like San Francisco, Chicago, and Detroit, often wearing a red clown nose, oversized glasses, or scrubs over his clothes.
These visits were inspired by a promise he made to himself in the late 1980s following the death of a close friend’s daughter, believing that laughter was a “sacred” gift and a form of healing for children with terminal illnesses.
Following a difficult visit, a nurse found him weeping in a break room, to which he replied he continued doing it simply “Because I can”.
