Any law punishable only by a fine is just a subscription for the rich.

Yep, rich can do whatever they want and get a slap on the wrist.

Tall fence covered with a climbing plant and regular height doors?

Any kind of fine should be proportionate to wealth/income.

An alternative to the people saying it should be a percentage of income is just to increase the penalty for every offense

Law does not apply to the rich.

I wish I could have that at my house. Why do people care so much to be able to see someone else’s house?

Eh it gives money to the municipality, it’s not an eyesore, let him have his fence.

Interesting, when I lived in California I had a six-foot fence, but my hedge of pyracantha was ten feet tall, as there was no restriction on vegetation. Must be a city thing. I note that the gates in this video are only 6 ft. Also, techbro apparently has never heard of drones.

No more fines, just cut them lower and send the bill. In my city a developer is building an apartment building approved for 10 stories. He built it 12 high expecting a fine he would recoup. The city is making him remove the top 2 floors before it will allow occupancy. Finally someone doing something right.

I despise Jeff Bezos as much as anyone else, but making it illegal to have some tall vegetation / fences is really dumb. How about fixing that
Cl0wnL on
I’m kind of okay with this. Because it’s a mostly harmless money maker for the city.
And this isn’t something bezos did. It was like that when he bought it. It’s been like this for decades. Bezos just bought it a few years ago.

Just to play devil’s advocate, a tall fence that adds green space to an urban environment should be encouraged, not punished, I mean I would do the same to have privacy and cleaner air. Fuck it I’ll pay the fine lol. It’s just stupid that it’s a fine in the first place.

Where i’m from the municipality just cuts it themselves and sends you the bill if you refuse to cooperate.

I think I read somewhere years ago that the hedge was actually grown by a previous owner before height restrictions were enacted, so this giant hedge was sort of grandfathered in as an exception. Could be wrong tho.

Simple solution. Until the resident complies, make the fine exponentially progressive.

Should do like Finland. The fine is proportional to your wealth. Speeding tickets are applied this way.
dBlock845 on
Fines should scale with wealth. If the fine were say $10k for a normal homeowner, it should be $100-500M for a guy with Bezos’s wealth.

You mean his hedge is too tall?Â
I refuse to get upset about the height of the man’s well-kept hedge.Â
In fact, why is the government dictating the height of a homeowner’s hedge at all?Â
This isn’t some 1,500 foot skyline-defining feature. We’re talking about a sub 50 ft hedge at a private residence. As long as it’s well-kept what possible governmental purpose is served here?Â
