      I’m amazed that every comment so far doesn’t actually include the correct answer. 5,15,25,35,45,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59,65,75 are the numbers and the correct answer is 18.

      Just one time. They said *number*, not *digit.*

      Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised it this was actually the intended answer that got mixed up.

      The number “five” only appears once in that sequence. The numeral appears multiple times though.

      To be very pedantic you could also say the answer is one.  Because you would write the _number_ five just once, even if you wrote the _digit_ five 18 times.

      Since we want to know how many times we write the number 5, the easiest way to solve this is to add how many times 5 appears in the units column and how many times 5 appears in the tens column:

      Units column: 0**5**, 1**5**, 2**5**, 3**5**, 4**5**, 5**5**, 6**5**, 7**5** = 8 times
      Tens column: **5**0, **5**1, **5**2, **5**3, **5**4, **5**5, **5**6, **5**7, **5**8, **5**9 = 10 times

      Therefore, there are 8 + 10 = 18 occurrences of the digit 5 in the numbers 0 to 75

      I could be wrong about this, english is not my first languiage but isn’t 15 made up of the digits 1 and 5 not the numbers 1 and 5. If so the number 5 only shows up once from 0-75 namely 5. The digit however shows up 18 times (because it shows up twice in 55).

      Maybe it’s the question that’s wrong and it was how many times was Ferris absent?

      It should obviously be 18

      50-59 has **10** 5’s in the tens place

      5, 15, … 75 has **8** 5’s in the ones place

      You’d write the *number* “5” 1 time. You’d write the *numeral* “5” 18 times.

      If you write down the numbers from 0 to 75, you only write the number 5 once.
