After the 9/11 attacks there was short period of normalization in relations between the US and Iran. Iranian leaders condemned attack. Apparently chants „Death to America” were also suspended at the time. This brief period culminated in Iran joining early operations in Afghanistan, helping in overthrowing Talibs. Both sides coordinated uprising in Herat in November 2001.
Period of improved relations ended quickly though, with the US president Bush January 29 2002 speech calling Iran as part of the „Axis of Evil”. And the rest is history.

We almost normalized relations with Iran like three times and every time just decided not to because the knowledge that American culture will win out if allowed in is somehow too obvious.
Well yes, Iran would be interested in a weak Afghanistan to the East and a weak Iraq to the West. It’s hardly due to altruism or a desire to have peace with the West.
the war on terror was never about terrorism, it was about enforcing geopolitical goals by applying the label of terrorism. That’s why the US invaded Iraq even though they had nothing to do with 9/11 and that’s why other countries started designating their opposition as terrorist after 9/11 too. Turkey did that with the Kurds and China did it with Uyghur seperatists
