Macon, Ga. photographer A.J. Riddle shot the only known images of the Confederate prison camp at Andersonville, Ga. on August 17, 1864, just six months after it opened. It was already severely over-crowded, with insufficient water and limited sanitary facilities. [960×640]

The prison held up to 45,000 men at one time and close to 13,000 men died of disease. Following the war, camp commander Capt. Henry Wirtz was tried for war crimes and executed.
